Borgio Verezzi

Borgio and Verezzi are two completely different settlements that happen to share the same past.

Borgio is concentrated around the Church San Pietro Apostolo. The first stone was laid on the 12th of July, 1789, however the first mass was only held on the 31st of December 1808. The church took about 19 years to build mostly due to the French revolution, which began on the 14th of July 1789 in Paris and had an impact on the whole of Europe.

Verezzi does not really center around anything, but is more a conglomerate of many alleys and piazzas which come together above the San Martino church.

A special highlight of Borgio Verezzi is the stalactite cave. It was discovered in 1933 by 3 native boys who followed the waters of the Battorezza river to see where they went. Turns out the water disappeared into an underground cavern. The boys carved their names into the rock and since the opening of the caverns on the 29th of June 1970 has been called the “Area of signatures”. These grottos have also contributed to history as fossils of bears, elephants and saber toothed tigers have been found here dating back 500000 to 750000 years ago. Hours of operation are:
1st June to 30th September (Summer) 09:30am - 11:30am and 3:00pm to 5:30pm
1st October to 31st May 09:30am -10:30am -11:30am and 3:00pm - 4:00pm - 5:00pm
