Sisteron lies in a narrow pass deeply cut into the Durance valley. The town is dominated by the huge fortress which was severely damaged by bombing in 1944.
In the winding streets of the picturesque old town you will find the Musée de Vieux Sisteron in Rue de Provence with its Roman remains and the 12th century cathedral of Notre Dame des Pommiers, built in the Provençal Romanesque period.
